Best Places to Visit in Florida

When writing an article about the best places to visit in the state of Florida, the biggest difficulty is figuring out where to start. Should we talk about the plethora of exquisite natural springs that are scattered liberally from the Panhandle to the Keys? How about the near infinite list of exquisite beaches? There are simply too many great things to say about this state!

With this in mind, it’s hardly surprising that Florida ranks among the most popular states among tourists. Sure, there are pros and cons to beach living, but we’d argue that the former outweighs the latter by a long shot, whether your stay lasts for two weeks or the rest of your life! Now, let’s take a look at the most popular destinations among tourists in Florida!

Summary:

Florida, the ultimate tourist paradise

Ok. We’ve established that Florida is all but universally regarded as one of the best tourist destinations in the country, but it’s time to get down to brass tacks and talk about what really makes this state tick. In the following sections, we’ll cover some of the most notable reasons why this state is held in such high regard as a tourist destination. Let’s begin!

It appeals to everyone

For starters, this is a state for everyone. No matter where you’re from, how old you are or what you enjoy doing, you can rest assured that Florida has something you’ll love. Do you enjoy surfing? You should try it; there’s no better place to get into this hobby than Florida. Do you like nature? Florida has got that in spades!

The list doesn’t end there. Maybe you’re just a beach bum who can’t think of a better day than one spent reclining in a beach chair with a drink in your hand while you watch the surf ebb and flow. Would you believe it, Florida has plenty of places where you can do just that! From antique store browsing to culinary tourism, there’s something here for literally everyone.

The bottom line is this: Florida provides an astounding number of attractions for families, senior travelers, junior adventurers, treasure-hunters for Florida’s best kept secrets, stargazers, snowbirds, etc. Furthermore, the Sunshine State became a top retirement destination, where one can truly enjoy the fruits of their life’s work.

The weather is incredible

weather forest concept background

Say goodbye to snow and sleet; sunshine is the order of the day when you’re in Florida! If you’re looking for a place to escape the cold, then there’s no better place to do it than here in Florida. With entire months of sunny weather stretching from one calendar year to the next, this state is one place where the cold will be the last of your concerns.

This isn’t to say that you’ll never see a cloud in the sky when you’re in Florida; anyone who is familiar with the state will readily tell you that showers are far from uncommon. However, rain in Florida is different than in other states. Instead of being cold and dreary, rainfall in Florida is cool and refreshing, perfectly punctuating otherwise uninterrupted day after day of sunshine.

Furthermore, no discussion of weather in Florida would be complete without at least some mention of autumn and fall. In the sunshine state, these months are arguably the most pleasant, with the lowest humidity and most pleasant temperatures of any time during the year. As you lay back in your beach chair with the breeze rustling your hair, you’ll wonder why you only just now started spending time in this state!

Vacations are cheaper than you might expect

That’s all well and good, you say, but what about the budget? There’s no way this state is affordable to visit, right? Wrong! While certain cities are more costly than others, there are plenty of inexpensive vacation destinations scattered across the state of Florida. No matter where you choose to go, you can count on spending less in general.

The most obvious reason for this is arguably the cost of accommodation that you’ll find in the state of Florida. The best places to visit in Florida come in well below the average in terms of the cost of accommodation. Only the most expensive lodging will end up costing you more than a few hundred dollars per night. Considering how expensive accommodations are in other states, we’d call that a win for your wallet!

Then there are the other necessities that don’t seem expensive when you purchase them, but add up quickly. From food to fuel to sundries and other items, almost everything in the state is priced lower than other states with similar population density. These items might not be the cheapest in any state, but they’re certainly cheaper than average!

Floridians are friendly

In some states such as New York or Massachusetts, the local population has a reputation for being cold and standoffish towards outsiders. Not so in the state of Florida! With some of the friendliest, most charming residents of any state, you’ll rarely feel unwelcome or left out when you’re traveling through the Sunshine State!

For one thing, many of Florida’s residents are retirees. With a steady income and lots of time to kill, these snowbirds and old-timers are a sure bet when it comes to making casual conversation and shooting the breeze. Many of these senior citizens even have unique and interesting hobbies that you might find more enjoyable than your own!

Don’t misunderstand us though; Florida’s other residents are no less kind than their senior counterparts. If anything, they’re friendlier and more welcoming! With smiles on virtually every face, you’re never very far from a kind word or friendly face when you’re in Florida. It doesn’t matter what city you’re in or where you chose to go, you’ll always be warmly welcomed!

Must-see cities in the Sunshine State

Now that we’ve given you some thoroughly compelling reasons to make the state of Florida the site of your next vacation, it’s time to look at some of the state’s most attractive tourist cities. Some of them are known worldwide, others have probably gone undiscovered by you for your entire life. The one thing they have in common is the fact that they’re all excellent choices if you’re looking for a place to spend your summer vacation!

Sarasota, FL

st armands circle sarasota fl

Cozily nestled near the southwestern tip of the state, Sarasota is a breath of fresh air among the otherwise quiet and uninteresting cities that lie around it. Considering its many attractive attributes, it’s no surprise that this is widely considered to be one of the best places to live in Southwest Florida. Watch out; if you visit this city, you’re liable to end up making it your home before the end of your visit!

One of the most compelling aspects of this city is its thriving local culture. With art galleries such as the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the Art Center Sarasota, and many craft exhibitions and festivals. To fully explore the wonders of the city, you might want to consider moving here; if you decide to take this route, get in touch with one of the excellent real estate agents in Sarasota FL. Moreover, Sarasota is an excellent choice of destinations for nature enthusiasts. From the floor of the sea shelf to the murky depths of the bogs and swamps, nature lovers will never run out of things to do here!

While you’re here, you simply can’t miss the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Lido Beach, or Myakka River State Park all of which offer a plethora of opportunities to immerse yourself in exquisite natural landscapes. With its rich culture and beautiful surroundings, this city definitely contributes to the notion that the Gulf Coast has some of the best places to visit & live

Key Largo, FL

beautiful sunset tropical view

A chain of small islands in the southern part of the United States, Florida Keys, is connected by a concrete roadway. Key Largo is the greatest of these isolated coral islands. The incredible island is acclaimed for the world’s second-largest artificial reef, the USS Spiegel Grove, the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, and the famous Christ of the Abyss, a statue underwater.

The adventure never ends when you’re in Key Largo! Although there are plenty of opportunities to chill, we still recommend you to go picnicking on the beach, manatees from the dock. You can take an absorbing canal cruise on the African Queen, the iconic boat from the eponymous film starring Audrey Hepburn. There’s no shortage of things to see here, it’s true!

Key Largo is known to some as the Dive Capital of the World. There are a number of excellent reasons for this, but words strain to describe the full and unadulterated majesty of the place. With a subaquatic world that is every bit as diverse and varied as the one above the surface of the waves, you’ll have to be extra careful not to forget your surroundings when you’re struck by the sheer spectacle of it all!

Then there’s the local cuisine; and what cuisine it is! Lobster is without a doubt the most highly regarded dish on offer here, a meal that is best enjoyed from the patio of a beachfront restaurant at sunset. It’s got good food, exquisite scenery and no shortage of additional positive attributes; we’d say that these factors make Key Largo one of the best places to visit in Florida!

Cocoa Beach, FL

Cocoa Beach attracts a wide range of travelers, from space enthusiasts to sunbathers and surfers. The neighboring Kennedy Space Center allows visitors to get up close and personal with NASA’s shuttles and launch pads. It’s one thing to see a spacecraft lift off the pad on a small TV screen or phone; it’s another thing entirely to see this awe-inspiring place in person!

Ever played golf? You might like it! With some of the most well maintained and visually stunning golf courses in the state and perhaps the world, there are few better places to try out this pastime than here in Cocoa Beach. With wealthy businessmen and politicians coming from across the country to play here, these courses don’t spend much on advertising!

Big wave enthusiasts will find that Cocoa Beach FL is also one of the hottest surf towns in all of Florida! The surf is consistently raucous, providing beginners and experienced pros an equally thrilling experience. Ron Jon Surf Shop, the world’s largest store of its kind, also makes an appearance, with enough inventory to satiate even the most eclectic surf-related demands.

Guided Kayak tours of the area are also available to visitors who aren’t particularly keen on surfboarding. Head down to the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier and get in one of the excellent vessels on offer there, and you’ll quickly see why some say that this town is one of the most romantic places to visit in Florida. As you glide silently over the gently pulsing clouds of bioluminescent algae, there will be no doubt in your mind that this is one of the best places to visit in Florida.

Boneyard Beach, FL

boneyard beach florida

Boneyard Beach is a popular Jacksonville vacation spot and, to a certain extent, a well-kept secret. While its name may lead you to believe that the place has a sinister secret of some sort, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Boneyard beach is all about fun in the sun, and as such is one of the best places to visit in Florida for families!

At the northeastern extremity of the city limits, three miles of shoreline along the Nassau Sound create a spectacularly scenic and verdantly grassy paradise. The Beach is part of the Big Talbot Island State Park, one of the best places in Florida to visit for couples. If you’ve got someone special in your life, take them here; they’ll thank you for it!

While it isn’t nearly as popular with tourists as some of the other cities on this list, we’d argue that this is a good thing. The best places to visit in Florida aren’t necessarily those that are most popular, but those that are most beautiful and enjoyable. With its otherworldly scenery and charming populace, we’d say that it fulfills those parameters with ease!

Nature once again proves that it is the most extraordinary sculptor in the case of this sandy area; the shoreline of Boneyard Beach is home to 30-foot bluffs and a fabulous beach displaying massive driftwood trees that just as well could be an elephant cemetery. Essentially, it’s a nature preserve showcasing trails, boating docks, fishing spots, making it an excellent place to visit for nature lovers in Florida.

Every year, families from the Midwest and South flock to Destin’s beaches to enjoy the city’s signature dazzling white beaches, which are formed entirely of Appalachian quartz.

Beyond the unique and fascinating geological qualities of the sand on these beaches, the amenities and businesses surrounding the seaside are also quite snazzy. Moving to Florida: a convenient guide

happy couple from back traveling

After seeing all of these incredible, exquisite cities, we wouldn’t be surprised if you chose to make this state your home. There’s no telling what incredible experiences you’ll end up having if you choose to make this state your home! Obviously, you can’t make a decision like this without substantial thought and research.

To help you out with this, we’ve gone ahead and put together this handy guide. In the following sections, we’ll go over some of the most important details that you should keep in mind when moving to the state of Florida, giving you all the information you need to know before making this momentous decision. Let’s get started!

The real estate market in Florida

As you have probably noticed, we’ve recommended that you consider making the state of Florida your home several times throughout the course of this article. From a recreational point of view, this makes a lot of sense. There are a ton of things to see and do in the state of Florida, and there are few places where you’ll have as much fun as you will here. It’s a great state!

But what about the practical side of moving to Florida? Specifically    , is the housing market in Florida a solid investment of your hard-earned capital, or is it something that would best be avoided? We have to argue for the former! In our estimation, there’s no better time to invest in the Floridian real estate market than right now.

One of the most compelling reasons for this is the current median home value. At a cool $305,000 on average, homes in Florida are surprisingly affordable. Only a few thousand dollars more expensive than the national average, most home buyers with the capital to buy a home in other states will easily be able to afford a home here.

Then there’s the median home value appreciation rate. Having grown by a staggering 23% in the last year, home values are rising rapidly, making any investment a good investment here. If you’re judicious with your choice of a home, you could easily walk away with an investment that will double in value in the coming years!

Homes are also readily available in Florida, with many local real estate markets seeing turnover rates far above average. If you want to get in on this, you’ll need to find a real estate agent in the area that you want to move to and see what’s available there. With any luck, you’ll be moved into a new home in no time!

Cost of living in Florida

woman using pen on writing

Outside of purchasing a home, there are a number of additional factors that can dramatically affect the cost of living you encounter when moving to a new state. Expenses such as food, automotive fuel, utilities and other necessities all add up, and their combined cost is what we refer to as the cost of living.

So, what is the cost of living in Florida? It’s low, that’s what it is! As it turns out, some of the best places to visit in Florida are also some of the best places to live! The state as a whole is substantially less expensive than others, with a lower cost of living than almost any other state with similar population density.

One factor that contributes to this reality is the absence of a state income tax. Unlike many other states across the country, Florida doesn’t tax the income of its residents, leaving them to invest that money in any way they see fit. This has led to immense growth in the state economy, with incredible gains across the board. The results speak for themselves!

This isn’t to say that everything is cheaper than it is in other states. Electricity, for example, is cheaper per unit than it is in some states, but must be used in larger amounts during the summer due to the need for air conditioning. Other utilities vary in cost across the state, with some localities having substantially higher per-unit costs than the national average.

For the most part, however, things are a lot cheaper than they are in most states. Fuel is priced below average, making transportation a lot less expensive than you might expect. Even in cities with large populations, basic necessities and even some luxuries are a lot less expensive than they are in other states. This goes for the best places to live in Florida too!

Job Market in Florida

young trendy computer creative

“What about jobs?” you ask. If you move to the state of Florida, will you be able to find employment? The answer, in short, is a resounding yes! Florida may not be the highest state on the human development index unilaterally, but it is far and away one of the best places to find a job. Why is that, you ask? We’ll tell you!

For starters, there’s that little thing we mentioned earlier: no state income tax! In other states, you might find a job with a decent salary; in those states, however, you’d be forced to pay state income taxes as the regional government slowly but surely whittles away at the amount you take home at the end of the week or month.

In Florida, however, this couldn’t be further from the case. In most states, not paying your taxes will get you thrown in jail, but in this state that’s a thing of the past (you still have to pay your federal income taxes though). What’s more, many localities also have no city income taxes, so that’s one less thing to worry about.

As far as the job market goes, most of Florida’s large population centers have thriving job markets with a tremendous number of opportunities on offer. Unskilled laborers will have little difficulty finding employment, with a wide variety of positions available in fields such as hospitality, construction, agriculture and other market sectors.

Skilled workers will have an easier time finding gainful employment in this state. With rapidly expanding industrial sectors that are constantly in need of competent employees, those with the drive and ambition won’t have any trouble filling a position that pays well and offers competitive benefits. Just one more reason to move to Florida!

Public safety in Florida

police motorcycle

Ok, ok. We know that Florida doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to public safety. In recent years, the zany antics of some of this state’s more… animated residents have even become a meme on internet forums and social media. This has led to Florida gaining a somewhat sordid reputation. So: does this hold up?

The answer is no, surprisingly enough! While there are certainly a small number of outlandish crimes and news stories that pop up from time to time, this is less because they’re exceptionally common and more because they make for good clickbait. Statistically speaking, Florida is actually safer than it’s been in decades!

So, what do the statistics have to say about public safety in Florida? Quite a bit, actually. Starting with the violent crime rate, the numbers are right down the middle at a palatable 3.87 incidents per 1,000 residents as compared to the national average of 4 incidents per 1,000 residents. It may not be exceptionally low, but it’s not nearly as high as some of the more dangerous states in the country.

Property crime rates are also perfectly average, at a slightly more favorable 17.85 incidents per 1,000 residents per year, as opposed to the national median of 19. These rates vary from town to town, but most Florida municipalities are quite safe as compared to the average town in the United States. If you practice common-sense safety procedures, you’ll have nothing to worry about when walking the streets!

While the average town in Florida may not be in the top ten when it comes to safety, there are a number of towns that are statistically far safer than other cities in the state and across the country. The safest cities in the state are all excellent choices when it comes to choosing a place to call home in Florida.

Florida for families

middle easter family three having

While the previous sections have been particularly focused on more practical aspects of living in the state of Florida, there’s an important question we still haven’t answered. That question is whether or not this state is a suitable place to raise a family. If you have one or more children, it’s safe to assume that your entire thought process surrounding relocation is centered around them. So, what does Florida have to offer families?

Let’s start by talking about public safety. As we discussed previously, Florida is a lot safer than most people believe it to be, in general. When you factor in the fact that this state is also home to a number of the safest cities in the country, it seems reasonable to assume that finding a safe place to raise your children is thoroughly feasible.

Home prices are also quite low, even for fairly spacious models. With some careful searching and the help of a qualified real estate agent, you should have no difficulty finding a home that suits your needs and budget. What’s more, the purchase of a home in the state of Florida is all but guaranteed to secure a valuable, appreciating asset that you can pass on to your children.

Education is another area where Florida excels. With excellent education infrastructure in both the public and private sectors, this state is home to everything your child needs to obtain a successful and productive education. Once your child reaches college, they’ll be well prepared for the challenges that higher education will throw at them.

Speaking of higher education, let’s talk about the opportunities for higher education that you’ll find in the state of Florida. This state is home to an impressive number of excellent colleges and universities, many of which hold immense prestige in their fields. Shands Medical Center, for example, is one of the foremost medical colleges in the country. The bottom line? If you move to Florida, your children will have access to an excellent education!

Conclusion

A single life might not be enough only to visit the most outstanding tourist temptations Florida has prepared for us. Florida truly knows how to amaze and surprise us like no other state really can. The state intensifies the adventurer’s experience by providing new places to visit, brand new things to sink our teeth into.

Featuring such a colorful and impressive range of first-class services, clean streets, top-ranking education, and generally high living standards, Florida proves to be the true winner of the new millennium. No matter how long you stay in this state, you’re guaranteed to leave with starry eyes and a smile on your face. This truly is a wonderful place!
